Maximum Matching in Turnstile Streams

چکیده

We consider the unweighted bipartite maximum matching problem in the one-pass turnstile streaming model where the input stream consists of edge insertions and deletions. In the insertion-only model, a one-pass 2-approximation streaming algorithm can be easily obtained with space O(n logn), where n denotes the number of vertices of the input graph. We show that no such result is possible if edge deletions are allowed, even if space O(n3/2−δ) is granted, for every δ > 0. Specifically, for every 0 ≤ ≤ 1, we show that in the one-pass turnstile streaming model, in order to compute a O(n )-approximation, space Ω(n3/2−4 ) is required for constant error randomized algorithms, and, up to logarithmic factors, space Õ(n2−2 ) is sufficient. Our lower bound result is proved in the simultaneous message model of communication and may be of independent interest.

Maximum Matchings in Dynamic Graph Streams and the Simultaneous Communication Model

We study the problem of finding an approximate maximum matching in two closely related computational models, namely, the dynamic graph streaming model and the simultaneous multi-party communication model. In the dynamic graph streaming model, the input graph is revealed as a stream of edge insertions and deletions, and the goal is to design a small space algorithm to approximate the maximum mat...

Data Streams with Bounded Deletions

Two prevalent models in the data stream literature are the insertion-only and turnstile models. Unfortunately, many important streaming problems require a Θ(log(n)) multiplicative factor more space for turnstile streams than for insertion-only streams. This complexity gap often arises because the underlying frequency vector f is very close to 0, after accounting for all insertions and deletions...

New Characterizations in Turnstile Streams with Applications

Recently, [Li, Nguyen, Woodruff, STOC’2014] showed any 1-pass constant probability streaming algorithm for computing a relation f on a vector x ∈ {−m,−(m− 1), . . . ,m} presented in the turnstile data stream model can be implemented by maintaining a linear sketch A · x mod q, where A is an r×n integer matrix and q = (q1, . . . , qr) is a vector of positive integers. The space complexity of main...

Improved Approximation Algorithms for Earth-Mover Distance in Data Streams

For two multisets S and T of points in [∆], such that |S| = |T | = n, the earth-mover distance (EMD) between S and T is the minimum cost of a perfect bipartite matching with edges between points in S and T , i.e., EMD(S, T ) = minπ:S→T ∑ a∈S ||a−π(a)||1, where π ranges over all one-to-one mappings. The sketching complexity of approximating earth-mover distance in the two-dimensional grid is men...

Counting Arbitrary Subgraphs in Data Streams

We study the subgraph counting problem in data streams. We provide the first non-trivial estimator for approximately counting the number of occurrences of an arbitrary subgraph H of constant size in a (large) graph G. Our estimator works in the turnstile model, i.e., can handle both edge-insertions and edge-deletions, and is applicable in a distributed setting. Prior to this work, only for a fe...
